A dog once found a piece of bread. Holding it in his mouth, he set off across a river. As he walked, he saw his own reflection in the water.
He thought there was another dog in the water, with bread in his mouth too. “If I snatch his bread as well,” he thought, “I will have two pieces.”
The moment he opened his mouth to bark, his own piece of bread fell into the river and was carried away. Because of his greed, he lost even what he had.
The lesson
Greed always leads to loss. Someone who is not content with what they already have, and keeps eyeing what belongs to others, often ends up harming themselves. Instead of coveting the things of others, we should put our faith in our own hard work, honesty and contentment. A contented person is always happy, while a greedy person is never satisfied. So we should value what we have been given and avoid needless greed.
लालची कुत्ता
एक कुत्ते को कहीं से रोटी का एक टुकड़ा मिला। वह उसे मुँह में दबाकर नदी पार कर रहा था। चलते-चलते उसने पानी में अपनी परछाई देखी।
उसे लगा कि पानी में कोई दूसरा कुत्ता है, जिसके मुँह में भी रोटी है। उसने सोचा, “अगर मैं उसकी रोटी भी छीन लूँ, तो मेरे पास दो रोटियाँ हो जाएँगी।”
जैसे ही उसने भौंकने के लिए अपना मुँह खोला, उसकी अपनी रोटी नदी में गिर गई और बह गई। लालच के कारण वह अपनी रोटी भी खो बैठा।
शिक्षा (नैतिक संदेश)
लालच हमेशा नुकसान का कारण बनता है। जो व्यक्ति अपने पास मौजूद चीज़ों से संतुष्ट नहीं होता और दूसरों की वस्तुओं पर नज़र रखता है, वह अक्सर अपना भी नुकसान कर बैठता है। हमें दूसरों की चीज़ों का लालच करने के बजाय अपनी मेहनत, ईमानदारी और संतोष पर विश्वास करना चाहिए। संतोषी व्यक्ति हमेशा सुखी रहता है, जबकि लालची व्यक्ति कभी संतुष्ट नहीं होता। इसलिए हमें जो मिला है उसकी कद्र करनी चाहिए और अनावश्यक लालच से बचना चाहिए।
