The life of a true yogi. This article was written in Hindi; an English rendering is provided first, with the original below.
Yogiraj Lakshmananand Ji was born in Samvat 1987 (Vikrami) into a Kshatriya family of the city of Amritsar, Punjab. After his father passed away when he was barely two years old, he was raised by his devout, dharma-loving mother amid great struggle. From the age of 14 a spiritual inclination arose in him, and he began to be drawn towards the satsang of sadhus and saints.
Lakshmananand Ji’s early life was spent between the search for a true guru and the exposing of fraudulent ones. He saw from close quarters the corrupt conduct of the ‘Kund panthis’ and other pretender sects, and cautioned society against them. His views were clear: he was opposed to idol worship and superstition, because of which one section of society even called him an ‘atheist’. But his unbreakable devotion to the science of yoga did not let him waver.
At the age of 27 he met an accomplished sadhu (“Baba Ji”), from whom he learnt one-pointedness of the mind and the subtle methods of pranayama. He practised yoga rigorously in Baba Ji’s company for about 22 years. After Baba Ji’s departure from this world, his yoga sadhana attained its completion under the guidance of Swami Dayanand Saraswati Ji. Swami Ji explained to him, with great ease, the fourth pranayama and the intricate practices of samadhi.
Because of his resolve to serve his mother, Lakshmananand Ji did not take sannyas for a long time. After his mother’s passing, he took sannyas at Amritsar according to the Sanskar Vidhi composed by Swami Dayanand Ji. After two years of solitary sadhana following sannyas, he attained the experience of bliss and accomplishment (siddhi) in yoga.
At the age of 71 he compiled his experiences in the book Dhyan Yog Prakash. His chief aim was to protect seekers from the deceptions practised in the name of yoga and to acquaint them with the true science of yoga. He was a guileless yogi who believed in making yoga not merely theoretical, but directly proven through experience.
