Portrait of Pandit Shivshankar Sharma 'Kavyatirth'
Pandit Shivshankar Sharma “Kavyatirth”

Life and legacy of a great Vedic commentator.

Shivshankar Sharma was born in the village of Chihuta in Bihar, into a Maithili Brahmin family. During that period, Bihar was an important centre of Sanskrit grammar, Navya-Nyaya, and philosophy. His early education was received under Mahamahopadhyaya Ramshastri and Pandit Ambikadatta Vyas, both of whom were highly learned scholars of Sanskrit grammar and literature and were also critics of the principles of Dayanand Saraswati. Ramshastri remained opposed throughout his life, while Ambikadatta Vyas, although critical, had been somewhat influenced by the Rishi’s scholarship after engaging in a direct shastrartha (scriptural debate) with him, in which he lost.

Through these teachers, especially Ambikadatta Vyas, Pandit Shivshankar became acquainted with the ideas of Swami Dayanand. Curious to know more, he began studying the Rishi’s writings and was deeply impressed by them. He realised that despite his previous study of the Puranas and related literature, he had not truly understood the essence of Vedic truth. This inspired him to devote himself to the study of the Vedas and Vedic philosophy, and he soon became a committed follower of Dayanand’s Vedic ideology.

Pandit Shivshankar Sharma began publicly preaching Arya principles in his district, which provoked strong opposition from local pandits and orthodox Brahmins. Despite resistance, he consistently challenged his critics to scriptural debates. Eventually, he chose Ranchi as the main centre for his preaching activities. There, he worked extensively with the Bengal-Bihar Arya Pratinidhi Sabha and also taught grammar and related subjects.

After his work in Ranchi, he moved to Ajmer, where he continued both preaching and literary work. He wrote respected commentaries on the Chandogya and Brihadaranyaka Upanishads. Later, at the request of Swami Shraddhanand, he went to Punjab and served as a Vedic teacher at Gurukul Kangri. During this period, he also wrote commentaries on Rigvedic hymns not previously explained by Swami Dayanand. In addition, he authored scholarly works such as Omkar Nirnaya, Tridev Nirnaya, Jati Nirnaya, and Shraddha Nirnaya.

He had planned to compose a major philosophical work titled Arya Darshan, critically examining Eastern and Western systems of thought in light of Vedic principles. However, severe illness in his final years prevented him from completing this ambition. Even during suffering, he remained calm and spiritually firm, stating that illness was merely the result of one’s own karma and that God never acts unjustly.
