What the Vedas, the Yoga Darshan and our shastras say about the span of life.

View of Swami Dayanand Saraswati

  1. In the Vedas, there is a prayer for a hundred years of life, such as “Jīvema śaradaḥ śatam” (May we live a hundred autumns). Its meaning is explained by the Rishi in Satyarth Prakash (Seventh Chapter) as: “God commands that a human being should desire to live up to a hundred years, that is, as long as one lives, one should live performing actions and never be lazy.”
  2. In the first edition of Satyarth Prakash, Swami Dayanand Saraswati states: “The fruits of actions are three — birth, lifespan, and experiences (enjoyments/sufferings). As long as the root of actions, such as ignorance, remains, the experience of the fruits of actions also continues. And as the actions are, so are birth, lifespan, and experiences accordingly.”
  3. Swami Dayanand told his disciple Ganpat Rai that his lifespan would not exceed 30 years; therefore, he should not marry. However, upon his parents’ insistence, he married, and he died at the age of 28. (From the book Life of Dayanand Saraswati by Harbilas Sarda)
  4. One day, in Moradabad, a devoted follower named Ramlal asked Swamiji whether his health had suffered any harm. Swamiji replied that he had been poisoned several times. Although he expelled it through vomiting and medical procedures, some portion remained in his blood, which damaged his health. Otherwise, he said, his lifespan would have exceeded a hundred years, but now he did not expect this body to last long. (From Pyara Rishi by Mahatma Anand Swami)

View of Yoga Philosophy

  1. “Sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyur bhogāḥ” — In the commentary (Vyāsa Bhāṣya) on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it is explained that birth, lifespan, and bhoga arise from the same (previously) accumulated karma. Within that lifespan (that is, a next life as a result of the accumulated karma), bhoga are also produced by that very karma. The medieval commentator Vijnanabhikshu explains that a life exists as long as the prana remains. King Bhoja also explains it as “a long association of the self with a particular body”, meaning lifespan is the determined duration for which the soul remains connected with a body as a result of karma.
  2. In the Vibhuti Pada of the Yoga Sutras, siddhis are discussed, including the ability of a yogi to know the time of death through disciplined concentration. (Yoga Sutra 3.22)

View of the Vedas

  1. In Rigveda (8.54.7), it is stated that desire and lifespan are under the control of the Supreme Being. In Yajurveda, it is said: “Āyurdā agne asi, āyur dehi” (O Agni, you are the giver of life; grant me life) and “Āyur yajñena kalpatām”.

View of other scriptures

  1. Chanakya writes in his Niti Shastra: “Āyuḥ karma ca vittaṁ ca vidyā nidhanam eva ca, pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ.” Meaning: Lifespan and death are determined while the being is still in the womb.
  2. Sage Gautama states in the Gautama Dharmasutra that those who remain steadfast in their duties according to varna and ashrama produce various results through their actions; from these arise different births characterised by place, class, lifespan, and experiences of pleasure and pain. (Gautama Dharmasutra 2.2.29)
  3. In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (6.2.13), Pandit Shivshankar Sharma explains the phrase “saḥ jīvati yāvat jīvati” as: “A person lives as long as his lifespan lasts.” He further interprets it to mean: “One lives only as long as one’s bhoga remains.”
